Serving Finland’s fish farmers for more than 30 years

Nordic Trout fish farm, Finland

Oy BioMar AB now offers 30 years of experience to our partners in Finland, where fish farming is a strong player for producing delicious, healthy, sustainable local food.

With its thousands of lakes, long rivers and a long coastline Finland offers excellent conditions for fish farming. Here, commercial fish farming started in the late 1950’s. It had its first boom in the 1960’s, when industrial production of rainbow trout gained foothold.

Revolutionising fish feeds

With the introduction of dry feeds, the efficiency of fish farms grew stronger. BioMar was established in 1962, with the aim of producing dry feeds that showed to be revolutionising fish farming, especially in fry production. Finnish authorities granted import licence for BioMar fry feed, and first feed deliveries were made from the BioMar factory in Denmark to trout farmers in Finland.

BioMar’s collaboration with the Finnish fish farming industry has grown stronger ever since.

Establishment of Oy BioMar AB

Over the years, Finnish fish farming became a strictly regulated and supervised activity demanding for environmentally friendly feeds. In 1987, BioMar launched Ecoline, the first fish feed programme in the world with a feed declaration on its environmental impact. This development was noticed by trout farmers in Finland.

In 1993, Finnish authorities granted import licence for BioMar grower feeds and the demand for importing BioMar feeds boomed to another level. In 1994, BioMar established its first warehouse at the port of Turku to economise transportation and to strengthen fast in-land deliveries.

  • On 25th of January 1995, the Finland-based subsidiary of BioMar in Denmark, Oy BioMar AB, was established.

  • In 2000, the company expanded its operations considerably by acquiring the fish feed business of Suomen Rehu.

  • BioMar’s collaboration with the Finnish fish farming industry has grown stronger ever since.

Revolutionising fry feeds

While in the 1960’s BioMar pelletised dry feeds for fry revolutionised fish farming by delivering much cleaner and less polluting farming condition to the young fry, in the early 2000’s, BioMar’s extruded fry feed Bio-Optimal Start again revolutionised fry production by delivering highly condensed and balanced nutritional components.  (Picture: Laitakarin Kala fish farm, Finland)

Today, BioMar’s top fry feed in Finland and many other markets is INICIO Plus, targeting highly robust, resistant and good performing fry through the inclusion of various micro-ingredients such as Bactocell®, which is the only probiotic that is approved by the European Commission for its ability to potentially reduce deformities across fish species, and of B-WYSE™, consisting of multistrain yeast fractions that support the fish against environmental and physical challenges in the farm. (Picture: Jannen Lohi fish farm, Finland)

Collaborating for a green conversion of farming trout

The preferred BioMar top grower feed line in the Finnish market is EFICO Enviro 923 Advance. The “923” grower feed was specially developed for sea cage farming in Finland and introduced in 2002, under the name of Ecolife 23 and still to this day it is BioMar’s most selling product for sea cage trout farming in the Baltic Sea.

In 2020, BioMar launched Blue IMPACT™, a feed concept aiming at minimising the environmental impact of aquaculture. First feeds of this range were developed in close cooperation with farming companies in Finland, Estonia and Sweden and targeted challenges faced by cage farming in the Baltic Sea area.

Finnish fish farmers have always been concerned to utilise feeds that combine the best total economic performance and the best environmental and sustainable performance. And BioMar has always constantly further developed our feeds to implement the latest R&D knowledge and to suit market demands and legislations. For BioMar and the ever-energetic team of Oy BioMar AB, being a partner in projects for the development of efficient and sustainable feed solutions is an important step forward in the innovative development of specially designed feed solutions for fish for future generations. (picture: Koillis-Suomen fish farm, Finland

Circular by nature: The real story of fish meal

Fish meal is widely regarded as one of the most efficient and complete protein sources available for aquafeeds. It provides farmed fish with a rich supply of essential amino acids, high-quality proteins, vitamins and minerals, all of which are critical for rapid growth, metabolic health, and immune system function. For many species, particularly in early life stages, fish meal remains an irreplaceable component of nutritionally balanced feed due to its digestibility and nutrient density.

The jet platform – efficient and simple oxygen enrichment

The oxygen content of the water is often the most prominent limiting factor in intensive fish farming. It is a well-known fact that poor oxygen content means that it is not possible to utilise the full potential of both the fish and the feed. A jet platform is an example of an efficient and yet simple mechanical method for oxygen enrichment of water.

Stay in control of oxygen fluctuations

In fish farming, large fluctuations in the oxygen content of water have a negative impact on the well-being of the fish and consequently on its growth. High water temperatures or rich vegetation in the water are important alarming factors to observe, especially in summer periods.

    Ensuring optimal oxygen levels

Just like humans, fish need certain levels oxygen to thrive. Sub-optimal oxygen levels may have consequences on the well-being of the fish and consequently on the economic outcome of a fish farm. Active observation and assessment are required to take the necessary actions in good time.
